Fitness Myths Debunked
The term “ toning”
The term toning is used in the fitness industry to refer to the appearance of increased muscle and decreased fat, and that's just what it is. There is no certain exercise that “tones” muscles rather than builds them. If you are looking for a leaner look, nutrition plays a vital role in decreasing body fat, which in turn reveals more muscle definition.
Lifting makes you appear bulky
In the same way, the “toning” comes from a low-fat percentage and increased muscle mass; the “bulky” look comes from increased fat along with an increase in muscle mass. This shouldn't steer you away from strength training, as having more muscle on your body increases the amount of calories you burn at rest.
Targeting fat loss
Although we can do exercises for specific body parts, that does not mean that we are in turn losing fat in those same areas. Fat loss is determined by how much fat is on the body. Pairing a strength training program with a calorie deficit is the ideal way to see changes in body composition.
Supplementation is essential for gains.
Yes, supplements can aid in performance and specific goals, but most of the time, if you are consistently strength training and eating mostly whole foods, you are getting what you need to look and feel your best.
